Hannan was held in custody for five days and his associates for two days.

The people of the Dakshin Khan area are unhappy with the oppression of Aminul Islam Hannan aka ‘Japanese Hannan’. He had been torturing people for so long showing fear of guns. Hannan, a Japanese man, continued to discredit the ruling Awami League party, even though he had no political affiliation. Bangabandhu used to hang his signature on a sign in front of his house along with the image of high-level government leaders, including the Prime Minister. He used to carry a licensed shotgun and pistol around Sangpang and create panic in the area. He would draw his gun for little reason and show fear. The Japanese Hannan was directly involved in various construction and extortion works, bidding bazaar, drug trafficking and other misdeeds in the area.

The court granted Hannan five days of preventive detention and two days for seven others in two cases, including the murder of businessman Abdur Rashid, 39, in broad daylight on Wednesday. The court approved the order after hearing the case of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Saeed on Thursday. The other accused detainees are Hannan’s son, Ikramul Islam, Hannan’s brother, Shafiqul Islam, his accomplices Al Amin Pradhan, Khorshed Alam, Zahurul Islam Ripon, Nurun Nabi and Mosharraf Hossain.

Locals have been reporting on Hannan’s misdeeds since his arrest. If Hannan didn’t do what he wanted, Hannan threatened to kill him using his handcuffs, hitting him, and showing him weapons. Hannan has been controlling the area’s garbage trade for the past 10 years. Recently, Sohail Raza, Vice President of Airport Thana Awami League, had a dispute with people over control of the garbage business. Due to this there was a confrontation between the two sides. Hannan is said to have shot two more people before businessman Rashid.

In 1996, Hannan fled the country to Japan due to a dispute with a terrorist group in the Dakshinkhan area. He returned to the country in 2004 during the BNP government. Later he built a house and named it Japanese Cottage. Since then, everyone in the area knows him as the Japanese Hannan.

Locals allege that he took over by force as the self-appointed chairman of any committee or organization in the area. He is also known as Hannan by the locals as he made various posters, banners and signs with photos of the ruling party leaders and hung them in different places in the area.

When asked about the ruling party’s positions, Azizul Haque Rana, general secretary of the Dhaka Metropolitan North Awami League, said that Hannan does not hold any position in the Awami League or any of its affiliates. I heard his name after the murder on Wednesday. Dakshin Khan Police Station OC Sikder confirmed that Hannan did not have a title. Shamim Hossain too.
