None of the six air-conditioned (AC) devices in the Baitus Salat Jame mosque on the west floor of Fatullah in Narayanganj exploded. This suggests that an explosion has occurred in the mosque due to a gas pipeline leak.
Lt. Col. Zillur Rahman, chief and director of the fire service’s investigation committee, told reporters on Sunday. He said the ACs inside the mosque burned in the fire caused by the explosion, but did not explode. The box outside the air conditioning is also intact.
The blast took place at the Baitus Salat Jame mosque in the western part of Fatullah in Narayanganj on Friday night during Esha prayers. So far, 24 faithful have died in it. The bodies of 23 people were handed over to their families until Sunday morning. In addition, 13 people are undergoing treatment at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burns and Plastic Surgery in critical condition. None of the injured are safe, said the coordinator of the Burn Institute, professor. Samanta Lal Sen.
The fire service has formed a four-member investigative committee on the explosion. The committee has been asked to submit a report within 10 business days.
