With the help of BNP leader MA Qayyum, Monir took possession of more than 100 parcels in RAJUK’s Badda Rehabilitation Zone. He has constructed multi-story buildings on five plots in J-Block, Uttara and Badda de Baridhara. Monir was also friends with some officials and employees of RAJUK and the Department of Public Works, including a former president.
According to various sources involved in the investigation, Golden Monir used to seize more than 200 parcels with the help of this union and also carried out all kinds of official work, including adjudication of parcels, approval of designs, naming, sales permit, license of mortgage. Aside from car selection, Monir’s business also ran around the ‘Jamjam Tower’ at the Sonargaon Janpath junction in Sector 13 of Uttara. Golden Monir constructed the building worth Tk 200 crore on a 20 katha plot in collaboration with three associated smugglers. One of his associates is councilor no. 53 from Dhaka North and owner of the Zamzam Tower. Shafiqul aka Sona Shafi testified on behalf of customs officials in a 1996 murder case at the airport. After that, his gold smuggling business escalated. Monir, who went from being a businessman to a land thief, recently learned of the investigation against him. A month ago, he sold the Zamzam Tower property to other partners for Rs 50 crore.
Monir is constructing another commercial building called ‘Safa Tower’ in Sector 11 of Uttara. He is the sole owner of the building. Despite having assets worth more than Tk 1000 crore, he showed assets worth Tk 25.62 crore on his income tax return last year. It is known that he has Tk 412 crore in 24 bank accounts. Rs 517 million have been withdrawn from these accounts. Also, Golden Monir has loans of Rs 110 crore Tk in some banks.
Although Monir was arrested last Saturday, his accomplices remain out of reach. RAB officials say an investigation is ongoing into Monir’s associates.
Meanwhile, the RAB yesterday filed three cases against Monir at the Badda police station. One case was registered under the Gun Law for recovering a foreign pistol from home, one case under the Narcotics Law for recovering foreign liquor, and one case under the Special Powers Law for recovering 600 bags of gold and dollars. Badda Police Station Inspector Mohammad Yasin Mia, who is investigating the case under the Weapons and Special Powers Act, requested a preventive detention of 14 days for seven days. Following the hearing, Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Bakkar Siddique granted seven and 14 days pre-trial detention in two cases. However, this refund will be effective at the same time. Badda SI Police Jane Alam Dulal Monir, the investigating officer in the drug case, requested a seven-day pre-trial detention. Following the hearing, the court granted a four-day pre-trial detention to Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Masud Ur Rahman.
According to the RAB, the police and various local sources, Monir set up a car showroom called ‘Auto Car Selection’ in Pragati Sarani to launder black money after owning a large amount of money in the gold smuggling business.
According to sources, Monir was close to former RAJUK president Abdur Rahman, former RAJUK CBA leader Abdul Jalil Akand and his relative Mohammad Obaidullah, a low-ranking RAJUK aide, RAJUK Sramik League president and a high-ranking aide. . Sources said that Monir used to go to RAJUK’s director, Sheikh Shahinul Islam, to work on plots in the Purbachal and Banani-Baridhara areas for two to three years. Monir also has good relations with Pradeep Kumar Basu, Additional Chief Engineer, Metro Zone, Department of Public Works.
In a briefing yesterday, Lt. Col. Ashiq Billah, Director of the RAB Law and Media Branch, said: “During the raid on Monir’s house, we learned that RAJUK had confiscated more than 200 parcels and land in the capital and surrounding areas in collaboration with various levels of officials. “
Incidentally, RAB raided Baddar’s home from Friday night to Saturday noon and arrested Golden Monir along with 600 loads of gold jewelry, foreign pistols, liquor, huge currency from 10 countries and Tk 1.9 crore and five unauthorized vehicles.
