Execution of eight militants

Each of the eight defendants in the murder case of Faisal Arefin Dipan, editor of Jagriti Prakashan, has been sentenced to death. All are members of the banned militant group Ansar al-Islam.

Judge of the Dhaka Special Anti-Terror Court on Wednesday. Mojibur Rahman announced the verdict. In addition to the death penalty, each defendant has been fined Taka 50,000.

The judge ordered that they be hanged until their death was confirmed. The verdict in the sensational case was announced within 36 business days of the court.

The judge also observed that those who could kill people for publishing books were enemies of society and the state.

Editor Dipan is the son of retired Dhaka University professor Abul Qasim Fazlul Haque.

The convicts sentenced to death are Moinul Hasan Shamim, Md. Abdus Sabur, Khairul Islam, Md. Abu Siddique Sohail, Mozammel Hossain Sayem, Md. Sheikh Abdullah, dismissed Major Syed Ziaul Haque and Akram Hossain.

The first six are in prison and the last two are on the run. Some terrorists entered the Jagriti editorial office on the third floor of the Aziz Super Market in the capital and hit Dipan on the back of the head with a sharp weapon.

The event occurred on October 31, 2015 between 3:30 p.m. and 3:50 p.m. The verdict was announced 5 years, 3 months and 7 days after the incident.

Before the verdict was announced, the six jailed defendants were presented in court. After the verdict was announced, they were sent to jail with execution warrants. Arrest warrants have been issued against the two fugitives.

Police surveillance intensified at the courthouse on Wednesday to mark the verdict. The defendants were brought to court around 11:30 pm. The court began reading the verdict around 12 noon.

The judge read parts of the 53-page verdict. Dipan’s wife, Dr., who appeared in court with the announcement of the verdict. Razia Rahman burst into tears. Relatives next door consoled him.

After hearing the verdict, he expressed his gratitude to the Creator and the court. “I am very ill,” Razia Rahman told reporters. My mother died yesterday. I am satisfied with this verdict.

I thank everyone involved in this verdict. The only expectation now is a quick execution.

In addition to Dipan’s family, the court’s special prosecutor, Golam Charwar Khan Zakir, and the chief prosecutor of the Dhaka Metropolitan Court of Judges for Sessions. Abdullah Abu expressed his satisfaction.

Defense attorneys Khairul Islam Liton and M Nazrul Islam said they would go to the high court against the verdict.

Observation of the verdict: The court judge observed in the verdict that Faisal Arefin Dipan, publisher of Jagriti Prakashan, was killed for publishing Abhijit Roy’s book as part of the murder of writers, bloggers and publishers.

Major Syed Ziaul Haque fired among those charged in Dipan’s murder provided instructions, training and funding to the main killers. And the defendant Akram Hossain planned.

The defendant Moinul Hasan Shamim provided weapons, suggested murder, and directed and directed the main killers. The defendant Mozammel Hossain Sayem participated in the murder plot and rehearsed at the scene.

Those who can kill people for publishing books are enemies of society and the state. If the perpetrators of Dipan’s murder survived, members of Ansar al-Islam would be encouraged outside of trial to commit the same crime.

Since the defendants have been involved in the assassination attempt on Dipan as a member of Ansar Al Islam. That is why it is advisable to give them the same punishment. The labor defendants can’t get any sympathy.

Therefore, justice will only be assured if the maximum death penalty is applied to each of the accused and it will be an exemplary punishment.

On the one hand, the relatives of the deceased will have peace of mind and, on the other hand, others will be scared and discouraged to commit such heinous crimes in the future.

The verdict also said that members of Ansar al-Islam killed blogger Riyad Morshed Babu in Savar.

On the same day, terrorists attacked Faisal Arefin Dipan, publisher of Jagriti Prakashani in Shahbagh Aziz Super Market and Tutul, publisher of Shuddhaswar Prakashani in Lalmatia.

As part of the jihad, members of the banned team Ansar al-Islam or Ansar Ullah Bangla, as well as the defendants in the case, attempted to silence bloggers, writers and editors.

At the same time, it creates public panic and disturbs public safety. And the purpose of all this is to curb people’s freedom of expression. Destroy the democratic and secular character of the state.

Murder case, investigation and trial: Editor Dipan was assassinated on October 31, 2015.

In this incident, on November 2 of that year, Dipan’s wife, Dr. Razia Rahman, presented the case to the Shahbagh Police Station.

Following the investigation, a charge sheet was filed in court on October 17, 2016. Investigative Officer DB Assistant Superintendent of Police. Fazlur Rahman presented the charge sheet for the case.

All eight defendants were charged on the charge sheet. The court became aware of the charge sheet on September 13, 2019. On October 13 of the same year, the court filed charges against the accused.

Testimony in the case began on December 1, 2019. Testimony in the case ended on December 31, 2020. 23 people have testified in the case.

After discussions between the state and the defendants, the court set January 24 as the date to announce the verdict of the case.
