Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC). Atiqul Islam told the merchants, do business in this city but don’t ask permission, it can’t be. The signs that we are breaking, have been said repeatedly for a month, we have given notice in the newspaper, we have given public notice. Even then they are not listening. These are the buildings you are looking at, there are so many signs here, none of them have paid any taxes for the signs. But they are going to trade.
He said this while inspecting the eviction of illegal signs at the Uttara Jasim Uddin intersection in the capital at 10-30 am on Sunday.
Atiqul Islam further said that this city has to abide by the rules. There are guardians of this city. Mayors and councilors are elected by popular vote. The responsibility of the mayor is to implement a city comfortable for the people. Looking at these signs, it’s a complete mess. We will take legal action against them whenever we see wrongdoing.
The mayor said that similar operations would also take place in other areas of the DNCC. He said, “We will go to Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Magbazar, Kawranbazar, Malibagh in phases.” Since we have a labor crisis, we are doing the job slowly.
“If we want to clean up the city, kill mosquitoes and even pay our employees, we have to pay taxes,” Atiqul said. I urge everyone, let’s make a beautiful city. This city belongs to all of us. There is still time for those who have not taken sign approval to pay the tax at a fixed rate based on size.
It is worth mentioning that on Sunday five DNCC magistrates held an auction of illegally constructed construction materials and the removal of illegal signs on sidewalks and roads in different areas of Uttara.
