911 illegal businesses in the Fulbaria market of the capital, 300 evicted by DSCC, the operation will continue today

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has launched a campaign to evict the illegal stores at Fulbaria Market in Gulistan. Traders began protesting in front of the market when the DSCC mobile court went to launch the pre-announced campaign on Tuesday morning. Later, around 1 pm, the DSCC began to demolish the store on the sidewalk in front of Nagar Plaza. Excited by this, the merchants began to throw bricks. At this time there were persecutions and clashes on both sides. Subsequently, the police managed to control the situation by firing some bursts of tear gas. Two employees of the city corporation were injured at the time. After that, the campaign continues in phases. Of the 911 illegal stores in the market, 300 were evicted. The eviction lasted until 5:30 pm. The eviction campaign will begin again at 11 am Wednesday, said Abu Naser, DSCC public relations officer.

According to City Corporation, the 911 stores have been installed in the ABOC block of City Market (City Plaza, Nagar Plaza and Jaker Plaza) owned by DSCC, replacing the elevators, stairs and bathrooms. Of these, 308 illegal stores were set up in City Plaza, 292 in Nagar Plaza and 311 in Zak Plaza. After new mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh took over, he formed a committee to find out the unplanned store and its general condition. The five-member committee, headed by the corporation’s chief engineer, identified seven unplanned stores in the mall and recommended their eviction. The mayor agreed with the committee’s recommendation and ordered the eviction of the unplanned stores. Then the campaign began. However, merchants claim they have paid hundreds of thousands of rupees to legalize these unplanned shops during the former mayor’s time. Now the officials of the municipal corporation have come to vacate the store without warning.

It is known that Delwar Hossain Delur, president of the Business Welfare Association, had absolute control over this market in Fulbaria. There are allegations that he illegally built and sold those stores without permission from the corporation. After that, he earned thousands of rupees year after year saying it would give legitimacy. He was assisted in this task by a class of dishonest officials from the DSCC revenue department. He built his empire in Fulbaria Market by managing the people in the highest positions of Nagar Bhaban in different ways at different times. Delwar Hossain Delu lost control of the market after his clients were arrested during an anti-casino operation last year. Ittefaq tried to contact Delwar Hossain Delu, but could not reach him. However, a source said, he is currently in Malaysia.

Monirul Islam, a merchant who suffered in City Plaza, said: ‘I bought a two-handed blind shop for Tk 10 lakh. Later, Delu took another Tk 10 lakh to make the tent permanent. But now the store is being evicted. The business has been in recession for a long time. If they evict me now, I will have to stay on the street with my family. ‘

Another trader, Rafsan Ahmed, said: ‘I temporarily bought the shop for Tk 15 lakh. Why vandalize now? When asked who gave the money, he said: “No one has taken the money alone. There are business leaders in the market, there are people from the city corporation.” I bought the store about seven years ago.

Jahangir Alam, Deputy Secretary of the City Plaza Market Owners Association, said: “We wanted to have the opportunity to do business at least during the winter season. Everyone’s business was closed in Corona for a long time. Even if I had some time, everyone would have benefited. ”

Russell Sabrin, director of properties for the city corporation, said the stores had been built beyond design. We have given notice before evicting illegal businesses. He said that all the stores would be vacated in phases.

When asked about this, the Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation, Attorney Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, said: Those who have approval will do well here. We will confirm it. In phases, we will evict all illegally constructed stores from all city corporation markets.

18 street vendors arrested: Meanwhile, the Lalbagh Traffic Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 18 street vendors accused of occupying sidewalks in the Badamtali area of the capital. The operation was led by Deputy Police Commissioner Mohammad Shahidul Islam. The additional deputy police commissioner said such operations will continue to reduce traffic congestion in Badamtali and other areas.

Police said pedestrians were unable to move normally as they were occupying the sidewalk and selling various products. Due to these street vendors, pedestrians risk their lives to walk down the street. This interrupts the movement of vehicles, which often leads to accidents.
