Members of the Police Investigation Bureau (PBI) arrested Mulhota Khaleq Hawlader, who tried to hide his body in a drum after killing Sabina Yasmin, 34, wife of Shahidul Islam Hawlader, a resident of the Diasur area in the municipal city of Gournadi in Barisal.
Khaleq Hawlader, who was arrested at noon on Friday (December 25), was handed over to the Barisal Magistrates Court for a confessional statement pursuant to section 164.
Earlier on Thursday (December 24), members of the Barisal office of the Police Investigation Bureau (PBI) arrested him in the Hijlatala area of the Bandar police station around 3pm.
The deceased was identified as Sabina Yasmin, daughter of Saheb Ali from the Nazirpur area in Muladi upazila of Barisal and wife of Shahidul Islam Hawlader, a resident of the Diasur area of Gournadi municipality. Since her husband was in Qatar, Sabina lived with her three children in a rented house in Fatullah, Narayanganj.
On the other hand, the house of the arrested falcon is in the Mahilara Bimerapar area of Gournadi. He worked as a caretaker for a building under construction in Kashipur in the city of Barisal.
The Officer-in-Charge (CO) of the Gournadi police station, Afzal Hossain, said he arrived at his father-in-law’s house on November 20, the day of the murder. Then, around 10 in the morning, he received a call on his mobile phone. After talking on the phone, he left the house and left the house. It has not been found since. Sabina Yasmin’s body was found inside the drum of a passenger bus named PS Classic Paribahan of the internal route at the Bhurghata bus stop in Gournadi around 10 pm that day.
The deputy inspector (SI) of the Gournadi police station, Abdul Haque, presented a murder case against some unidentified people. The Police Investigation Office (PBI) was in charge of investigating the murder.
Humayun Kabir, Police Superintendent at PBI Barisal office, said: “Khaleq Hawlader paid Tk 6 lakh about 10 months ago to go abroad through Sabina Yasmin and her Qatari expatriate husband Shahidul Hawlader. Coronavirus outbreaks occur. Later, when Khaleq refused to go abroad for this reason, Sabina recently returned him 1.5 lakh rupees (Khaleq). But Sabina was late to return the remaining 4 lakh. Enraged by this, Khaleq called Sabina on her mobile phone on the morning of November 20.
Then there was a dispute between them over the money that was owed to Khaleq’s house. At one point, Khaleq bound Sabina’s hands and feet and struck her on the head with a hammer. Later his body was stuffed into a drum for hiding. On November 22, the police raided Khaleq Hawladar’s home in the Mahilara Bimerapar area of Gournadi and recovered the hammer and rope used in the murder. The police also arrested his wife Rahima Begum for making inconsistent comments during questioning.
Police Superintendent Humayun Kabir said: “After the murder, Khaleq Hawladar went into hiding. He did not stay in one place for more than a few days to avoid arrest. Two days ago, with the help of sources and information technology, we learned that Khaleq is staying in the Hijlatala area of the Bandar police station. On the basis of this information, members of PBI raided the area around 3 pm on Thursday and arrested him. He confessed to killing housewife Sabina after her arrest. Khaleq was handed over to the Barisal Magistrates Court at noon for a confessional statement pursuant to section 164.
