Bogra Nandigram Upazila Awami League Deputy Secretary Anwar Hossain Rana has been charged with embezzling Tk 100 crore from his mother-in-law’s bank account, fixed deposits and various businesses.
Delwara (6) has also filed a written complaint against the wife of his daughter Rana, Akila Sharifa Sultana Khanam, for cooperating in this work. According to the complaint filed at the Bogra Sadar police station last Thursday night, the money was embezzled between June 2015 and September 21, 2020.
However, the police have not yet accepted the accusation as a case.
According to the complaint, Rana and his wife Akila have been seeking care at her mother-in-law Delwara Begum’s home in Katanarpara since 2015. Delwara handed over responsibility for running her three businesses and a store to her son-in-law Rana. This time, Rana embezzled 100 million rupees in various ways with the help of his wife Akila and business managers. When these words were leaked, Rana left the house on September 21 with death threats.
Prior to these incidents, Delwara Begum personally cared for all of its institutions and her five daughters Akila Sharifa, Mahbuba Sharifa Sultana, Nadia Sharifa Sultana, Kaniz Fatema and Touhida Sharifa Sultana were in charge.
When asked about the allegations, Awami League leader Rana told The Daily Star: “My mother-in-law was taken hostage by her four daughters and son-in-law, who made false accusations against my wife and I at the station. They’re doing this to tarnish my social status. ‘
Delwara Begum’s youngest son-in-law, Mofazzal Hossain Ranju, told The Daily Star that the police had not yet registered a case. They are conducting a preliminary investigation. The police have asked us for evidence of embezzlement. As the bank was closed, it was not possible to present the documents for the last two days.
“For the past five years, Rana and his wife have embezzled money by holding my mother-in-law hostage at gunpoint,” Ranju alleged. My mother-in-law’s other four daughters also own these businesses, but Rana used her weapons and political influence to prevent them from entering the business.
When asked why the complaint was not registered as a case, Humayun Kabir, officer in charge of the Bogra Sadar Police Station, told The Daily Star: So we are doing a preliminary investigation. The case will be registered as soon as the investigation finds evidence of embezzlement.
However, Delwara Begum could not be reached for comment.
Additional Police Superintendent Sanatan Chakraborty from Bogra Sadar Circle said: ‘Delwara Begum herself came to the police station and filed a complaint. We will take legal action after the initial investigation.
