China and Russia have once again voted in favor of a UN General Assembly resolution on the human rights situation of the Rohingya and other minorities in Myanmar. Twenty-six countries, including India, abstained from voting.
On Thursday, the last business day of 2020, 130 countries voted against the resolution.
This information has been given in a press release after the 47th session of the 75th General Assembly of the United Nations. The meeting discussed 25 proposals, including the approval of the UN budget.
China, Russia, Belarus, Cambodia, Laos, the Philippines, Vietnam and Zimbabwe have voted in favor of the resolution on the human rights situation in Myanmar.
Cameroon, Guinea, Namibia, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, Tanzania, Palau and the Solomon Islands, which last voted for Myanmar, have voted against the country. Twenty-six countries abstained, including India, Bhutan, Japan, Mongolia, Singapore, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Hungary, Nigeria and Venezuela.
The meeting approved the draft resolution, expressing concern about the serious human rights violations committed by the military and security forces in Kachin, Rakhine, southern China and Myanmar’s Shan states.
Explaining his country’s position against the resolution, Myanmar’s representative to the UN said that human rights were being used as a political tool. This is an internal matter of Myanmar. Myanmar has taken steps to protect human rights within the country and the leaders of the newly elected government are not allowing themselves to violate human rights.
The Myanmar delegation expressed interest in participating in the talks with the Rohingya and other minorities. However, they flatly rejected the offer.
