The police have recovered five ounces of adulterated honey and materials to make honey from two adulterated honey factories in Abhaynagar, Jessore, with the help of the villagers. Three people, including two factory owners, have been arrested.

All three were arrested in a raid on the village of Ziadanga in the Prembagh union of the Upazila on Wednesday afternoon. Five ounces of adulterated honey and materials to make honey were recovered.

The three arrested are Jahangir Alam, 35, son of the late Yakubbar Sardar from Ziadanga village, Rezaul Islam, 34, son of Abul Sardar from the same village, and Shahidul Islam, 21, son of Hasan Ali from the village of Gabkhali at Prembagh Junction.

Villagers in Ziadanga said that Jahangir and Rezaul from the village have been making adulterated honey in their homes for a long time with the help of an influential leader from the local Juba League union. This honey is supplied to different districts of the country. After reporting the matter to UP president Mofiz Uddin, the president stayed with the union’s local market committee leaders in Magura Bazar on Wednesday morning.

Approximately one ounce of adulterated honey was brought to the Nawapara market in a van at around 11:30 pm. At that time, President Mofiz Uddin and the leaders of the market committee arrested the three, including Madhu in the van, and reported to the Abhaynagar police.

UP President Mofiz Uddin said that for a long time a group of villagers from Ziadanga had been producing adulterated honey and supplying it to different districts of the country. With the help of Magura’s local market committee, it was possible to arrest three people, including adulterated honey. They were later handed over to the police.

In this regard, the Abhaynagar SI Gautam Kumar Mandal Police Station said that three people involved in the manufacture of adulterated honey have been arrested in the Ziadanga village of Upazila Prembagh Union. The confession of detainee Jahangir Alam was searched at his home. At that time, a factory to make adulterated honey was found in his home. Approximately four and a half ounces of adulterated honey, a digital scale, sugar as a honey-making material, five empty sacks of sugar, alum, water and some wasted honey were recovered.

He said Rezaul Islam’s home was raided at noon and almost half of the adulterated honey was recovered. Three people have been detained by the police along with adulterated honey and seized property.

Detainee Jahangir Alam said that 95 kg of honey seized from the Magura market would be sent to the Comilla district. He avoided answering the question that they are running this adulterated honey business with the help of an influential local Juba League leader. He also said that he has been making honey at home for several years.

Regarding the process of making honey, Jahangir Alam said that after mixing sugar, alum, water and wasted honey, it is burned in the fire. Then adulterated honey is made. It costs around 100 rupees to make one kg of honey. The honey produced is sold at a wholesale price of Rs 200 to Rs 300 per kg.
