Four people, including a leader of the Juba League, have been brought to the police station for questioning in connection with the vandalism of a Bagha Jatin sculpture at the Kaya College facility in Kushtia’s Kumarkhali upazila.

The detainees are Nizamul Haque Chunnu, president of the Governing Council of Kaya College, Harun Aur Rashid, director, Khalilur Rahman, night watchman and Anisur Rahman, president of the Kaya Union Juba League.

According to the record, some people arrived on a motorcycle around one in the morning on Thursday, destroyed it and left quickly. Khalilur Rahman, the university’s night watchman, said: ‘I heard a sound around one in the evening. Then I left the university and saw three people on two motorcycles on both sides of the road. I then reported the matter to the university authorities.

Kumarkhali Officer Upazila Nirbahi Rajibul Islam Khan, Kumarkhali Police Officer in Charge, Mojibur Rahman and later Kushtia Police Superintendent SM Tanvir Arafat visited the scene.

Mojibur Rahman, in charge of the Kumarkhali Police Station, told Kaler Kanth that the head of the university, Harun Aur Rashid, filed a case with the Kumarkhali Police Station under the Special Powers Act. The four people who were taken to the police station for questioning continue to be questioned.
Rajibul Islam Khan, an officer for Upazila Nibahi, said it is not yet known who caused such incidents. The police have launched an investigation into the matter. The culprits will be brought under the law very soon.

Before being taken to the police station for questioning, the principal of Kaya College told Kaler Kantha that the university is now closed. In the morning I heard about the incident on the phone from the locals and came to the university. But who or what destroyed this sculpture. I did not know that.

Kushtia Police Superintendent SM Tanvir Arafat said those involved in the incident would be found soon. The negligence of the school authorities in the incident is also being investigated. The district administration has formed a three-member investigative committee headed by Kushtia’s additional district magistrate, Sirajul Islam. The committee has been asked to report within the next three business days.
