The Turkish government has promised to respond to US sanctions against Turkey for the purchase of the S-400 missile defense system from Russia. Ankara has also called the US sanctions a “big mistake”.
The US government on Monday imposed sanctions on Ismail Demir, president of Turkey’s defense industry, and three other industry officials. The State Department has said that nothing can be imported from the United States for the Turkish sectors that are under sanctions and that the assets of those sectors in the United States will be confiscated.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said senior US officials have repeatedly told Turkey that buying the S-400 from Russia would jeopardize the safety of US military technology and troops. In addition, funds were provided to the Russian defense sector through the purchase of S-400.
Christopher Ford, the US undersecretary of state for international security and disarmament, told reporters after the sanctions were imposed that Washington wanted a solution to the problem, but Turkey had refused. He claims that Washington did not make the decision “suddenly or lightly.”
In response, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said there was no explanation for the US government’s decision. Ankara has repeatedly called for the establishment of a joint working group to solve the problem, but the proposal has not been fully used.
“We urge Washington to return as soon as possible due to this great mistake,” the Turkish ministry said in a statement.
“The US sanctions will definitely have a negative impact on bilateral relations,” the statement said. We will continue to take all necessary measures to protect our country.
