The US government has been threatening to impose sanctions since the Turkish government began sending S-400 missiles from Russia in July last year.
Turkey says that Russia’s missile defense system is not a threat to anyone, but the United States sees it as a threat. Last year, the United States threatened to suspend the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey and impose sanctions.
Then last Thursday, five other people, including two US officials, said the announcement of sanctions against Turkey was imminent. On Monday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced sanctions against Turkey.
In a statement, he said: “The United States has repeatedly made it clear to Turkey’s top leaders that its purchase of the S-400 system would be a source of concern for the US military and the security of military technology. A large number of money will go to Russia’s defense sector and Russia will go into Turkey’s defense and armed forces. “
“Even then, Turkey is moving towards purchasing the S-400 and testing the system. But Turkey also had alternative arrangements. Turkey could have taken that step from NATO member states to meet their defense needs.”
Referring to Turkey as an important ally of the United States and a partner in regional security, Pompeo said the United States wants to maintain a decades-long historical cooperation with Turkey in the defense sector by removing the S-400 barrier as soon as possible.
“Therefore, in coordination with the United States, I urge Turkey to solve the S-400 problem immediately,” he said.
Meanwhile, Christopher Ford, the assistant to the foreign minister for international security and arms control, told reporters in a conference call that the United States had no choice but to impose sanctions on Turkey because of its decision.
“We hope that the Turkish government is interested in holding talks with the United States in an effort to find a solution to this problem,” he said.
However, Turkey warned against the US sanctions, saying “this will have a negative impact on the two countries and Turkey will respond appropriately and in a timely manner.” According to the BBC, Turkey has asked the United States to reconsider its decision to impose sanctions.
The United States has imposed sanctions on three other senior officials, including Turkey’s Presidency of Defense Industries and its boss Ismail Demir. In addition to confiscating all of your assets in the United States, they will also be prohibited from entering and trading there.
