‘Bangabandhu’s sculpture is vandalized after hearing Mamunul Haque-Faizul Karim’s statement’

Police arrested two madrassa students involved in the demolition of an under-construction sculpture of the nation’s father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the dead of night at five intersections in Kushtia city and two madrassa teachers for allegedly helping in the incident.

The two arrested madrasa students told police that they vandalized the Bangabandhu sculpture after hearing statements by Islamic speakers Maulana Muhammad Mamunul Haque and Faizul Karim.

Earlier on Friday (December 4), they smashed the face and hand parts of a Bangabandhu sculpture under construction at a five-road junction in the city of Kushtia at a cost of around 3 million taka. The raid was followed by the arrest of two teachers at the madrasa on Saturday night (December 5) and the two students on Sunday morning, based on information provided by them.

The detainees are Abu Bakkar alias Mithun (19) and Sabuj Islam alias Nahid (20) and Professors Al-Amin (26) and Yusuf Ali (28), students from the Hefz department of Jugia Paschimpara Ibn Masud (RA) Madrasa in the Kushtia city.

Mithun is the son of Samsher Mridha from the Shingpur Mridhapara area of ​​Mirpur upazila in Kushtia and the son of Shamsul Alam from the Golibaria area of ​​Sabuj Daulatpur upazila.

The teachers arrested are Al-Amin, son of Abdur Rahman from Dhubail village in Mirpur upazila of Kushtia and Yusuf Ali, son of Azizul Mandal from Diar Bamundi village, under the Aminpur police station in Pabna district.

Khulna Range DIG Khandaker Mohiuddin told reporters at a press conference at Kushtia Police Lines on Sunday (December 6).

Additional DIG AKM Nahidul Islam, Kushtia Police Superintendent SM Tanvir Arafat and other police officers were present at the time.

Speaking at the press conference, Khulna Range DIG said: “After this sensitive incident, all police units mobilized using CCTV technology and images.” In 23 hours, the police were able to arrest two people who had participated in the attack and two teachers who had helped them.

He affirmed that “no one will be saved by damaging the country and the country’s state resources.” Police are also investigating who is behind the incident, who provided the fuel, and if anyone is involved behind the scenes.

In a written statement at the press conference, it was said that during the operation, Abdullah (15) and Abdur Rahman (18) from the Jamaat department of Jugia Paschimpara Madrasa Ibn Masood (RA) under the Kushtia Model Police Station were detained and questioned and video footage was shown. They know the two who smashed the Mujibur Rahman sculpture. They studied in the Hefz department of the same madrasa.

Analyzing the information subsequently received, Abu Bakkar alias Mithun and Sabuj Islam alias Nahid, a student from the same madrasa, were arrested in their respective villages on Sunday. He confessed to being involved in the incident during questioning after his arrest. Taking inspiration from the statements of Maulana Muhammad Mamunul Haque and Faizul Karim, they said that they had caused the incident.

According to their questioning, when everyone in the madrasa fell asleep at 2:05 p.m. Saturday night, the two secretly left the madrasa and crossed the Kanabil Bend in front of Shaheen’s councilor’s house. Then Fazlul Ulum came to the sculpture at the intersection of five roads along the Mazampur railway line through Kamalapur. Then, Abu Bakr Mithun and Sabuj Islam took a hammer out of Nahidul Islam’s bag and beat it with a hammer at different places in the sculpture under construction from 2:05 pm to 2:13 pm. After damaging the sculpture, he again walked to the madrasa and fell asleep.

In the morning, the madrasa teachers Al-Amin and Yusuf Ali were informed about the vandalism and told to flee the madrasa. The two teachers were subsequently arrested at the madrasa on the basis of the confessions of the accused.

A case has been filed at the Kushtia Model Police Station for the incident. Case number 6.

The incident took place in Kushtia amid protests by various Islamist organizations across the country over the construction of the Bangabandhu sculpture. The demolition of the under-construction sculpture of the Father of the Bangabandhu Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has sparked a strong reaction across the country, including Kushtia.
