Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed (MBZ) of the United Arab Emirates have been nominated for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize. They have been nominated for the award for establishing relations between the two countries. Lord David Trimble, winner of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize, nominated them for the award. The matter was confirmed by the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office on Tuesday. The Middle East Eye reported this in a report.
A statement from the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said that Nobel Peace Prize laureate Lord David Trimble had nominated Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, for the Nobel Peace Prize.
The award is expected to be officially announced in October 2021 in Oslo.
The United Arab Emirates established relations with Israel in September 2020, mediated by the President of the United States, Donald Trump. Following the agreement, the Abu Dhabi authorities ordered hotels to maintain mandatory Jewish food. Not to mention Israel’s name, the authorities grant 100% ownership to foreigners doing business in the UAE.
The Emirati authorities have stopped issuing new visas to citizens of the past 13 Muslim countries in an attempt to improve relations with Israel. The ban has been in effect since November 18, 2020. Countries sanctioned include Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen, Algeria, Somalia, Kenya, Iraq, Lebanon, Tunisia, Iran, and Syria. Travel and newly contracted visas from among the citizens of these countries will also remain until further notice.
Meanwhile, Netanyahu-MBZ’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize has sparked a backlash on social media. Critics say it is ridiculous for those accused of horrific human rights abuses to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
“The hands of the Israeli war criminal Netanyahu are stained with the blood of many Palestinians,” Mohamed Shafiq wrote on Twitter. David Trimble nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize. What an insult and joke for those who have been killed by this villain.
