The malefactors shot and killed 32-year-old Masudur Rahman Shuvro, general secretary of the Swechchhasebak League in Gauripur upazila of Mymensingh. At this moment, two more people got angry. The deceased was a resident of the Kalipur area of Shuvro Township. He was president of Upazila BRDB.
Police arrested three people, including UP President Riyaduzzaman Riyad, from the Gachha area of the Tarakanda police station in the district on Sunday morning.
There have been rallies and demonstrations in the area since Saturday night and this morning to protest the assassination of Shuvro. The main accused BNP leader and the UP president attacked and set fire to the Riyadh residence around 12:30 pm. Later, the criminals also attacked and set fire to the residence and business establishment of the mayor of the municipality.
Witnesses said that Masudur Rahman Shuvro was having tea with 4-5 of his associates at Abdur Rahim’s tea shop at Pan Mahal in the city. At that point, 8 to 10 gunmen got off the two auto rickshaws and suddenly started beating Shuvro at random. Shuvro ran for his life and made his way to the front of the Suchitra Medical Hall in Masalla Mahal, where he was accidentally stabbed and seriously injured. Later, when Shuvro got bored, the terrorists left thinking he was dead. Shuvro and his two accomplices Jahangir rescued Al-Amin and took him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where Shuvro died. When the news reached the area in the evening, great tension began.
Gauripur Upazila Swechchhasebak League President Sohail Rana said President Riyadh confronted Shuvro in a function that marked the anniversary of Ziaur Rahman’s martyrdom last year. Many believe that Riyadh and his men attacked Shuvro and hacked him to death in order to defame him.
Gauripur Police Station OC Borhan Kabir said the cause of the killing could not be determined at this time. The case is pending. A further investigation will reveal the real cause of the murder. Attempts are being made to arrest others. Currently the situation is calm.
