Akij Group

Akij Group, one of the main industrial companies in the country. The business started in 1940 with the help of Sheikh Akijuddin, an ordinary bidi trader. Although it started with the jute business, today several industries have been established in 21 sectors, including cement and ceramics. To extend Akijuddin’s initiatives even further to his successors, he has educated his children, albeit with little education. The family has trained their 10 children to run the industry. The boys are now following the path shown by their father. Five sons of Akijuddin are known to currently lead the Akij Group. The other five guys have created separate new businesses outside of the group.

The Akij Group website also mentions that only five people are on the Akij Group board.

By the way, before his death, Akijuddin himself divided all the wealth among the boys. However, sources said that the group’s two dozen industrial and commercial establishments will be divided among the five sons of Fer Akizuddin. The group’s legal and financial department is working on this. The distribution will be finalized soon through the Office of the Registrar of Corporations and Public Limited Companies (RJSC). The five brothers have decided to share their businesses in the midst of the Corona epidemic.

Sheikh Momin Uddin, managing director of SAF Leather Industries, Sheikh Akijuddin’s eldest son, died of coronavirus on August 24.

The main part of the Akij Group is led by five brothers: Sheikh Bashir Uddin, Sheikh Jamil Uddin, Sheikh Jasim Uddin, Sheikh Shamim Uddin and Sheikh Nasir Uddin. Sheikh Nasir Uddin is the president of the group. Sheikh Bashir Uddin is the Managing Director of Akij Group.

On the other hand, Sheikh Afil Uddin, another son of Akij, is now a successful businessman in the country by establishing a separate organization outside of the family joint venture. He founded the ‘Grupo Afil’. Afil Uddin is also involved in politics. He is a member of Parliament for the Jessore-1 (Sharsha) constituency. Afil Group currently has 26 industrial establishments. He started a separate business in 2000 with his father. Besides the agricultural sector, the group also has many heavy industries, such as jute mills, paper mills, poultry, brick, feed mills. At present, about 10 thousand officials and employees work in this organization.

Also, Ad-Din’s older brother is the CEO. Sheikh Mohiuddin. Among other children, Sheikh Momin Uddin, who died in Corona, inherited two institutions from the Akij Group. One is Akij Footwear and the other is SAF Leather. He was the managing director of both organizations. Additionally, Sheikh Aziz Uddin and Sheikh Amin Uddin serve as MDs for various organizations.

It is known that after the death of Akijuddin on October 10, 2006 at the age of 8, several new companies have been added to the Akij Group.

Sheikh Bashir Uddin, MD of Akij Group, told the Bangla Tribune, ‘Akij is an old dynamic group. The scope and breadth of this group has increased more than ever. He said: ‘His brothers are also doing business separately. He has established separate groups. The scope of your business has also increased. He said the Akij group was not harmed. Because none of them broke up from the Akij group or left the Akij group. As a result, the Akij Group is the same as before.

Akij Group leads the jute and beverage sector in the country. Akij also has the largest jute factory in the country.

Following the expansion of the business, Akij’s five sons and five industrialists left Dilkusha’s ‘Akij Chamber’ and established a new office called ‘Akij House’ on the Tejgaon-Gulshan Link Road in the capital. However, his other sons are still in Dilkusha’s Akij Chamber.

Although the business has expanded through tobacco products, Akij Group does not own Dhaka Tobacco. In August 2016, ‘Japan Tobacco’ bought ‘Dhaka Tobacco’ from Akij. At that time the company was sold for $ 1.5 billion. In the Bangladeshi currency, the amount is approximately 12 billion rupees.

Akij Corporation Limited and Akij Institute and Technology Limited were formed in 2001.

Although Akij Group is currently one of the main corporate entities in the country, the beginning was not easy. At the age of 13, Sheikh Akijuddin left his Khulna Fultala Madhyadanga village in 1942 in search of a livelihood. I used to buy oranges and lemons at Calcutta wholesale market with capital only 18 Tk and by ferry to Howrah Bridge. That was the beginning of the Akij Group business.
