The Police Investigations Office (PBI) arrested the murderer of Jannatul Ferdous Laboni, a passenger in the cabin of the Parabat-11 motorboat, using CCTV images and information technology.
The arrested Moniruzzaman Chowdhury (34) is the son of Abdus Shahid from the Kapasia area of Gazipur, but lived in the Darul Salam Main Abul Kalam Road, Mirpur-1, Dhaka government neighborhood area. He was arrested from there by PBI members from the Barisal district with the help of PBI members from Dhaka Metro (North) on Tuesday evening.
PBI Barisal Police Superintendent Humayun Kabir confirmed the matter in a press conference at PBI’s office on Ukilbari Road in Rupatalistha at 10:30 am on Wednesday.
He said PBI was searching for the man who arrived at the launch with the woman identified by looking at CCTV footage. At one stage, the identified person was arrested in Mirpur in Dhaka with the help of information technology. CCTV footage from the launch has been confirmed to match the person arrested. On the other hand, during the arrest, several posters were recovered from her, including Labni’s handkerchief and mobile. In addition, the jersey that Moniruzzaman wore at launch has also been recovered. During preliminary questioning, the defendants said that they are husband and wife. They had an argument in the cabin on the way to Barisal at night with the launch. At one stage in the fight, he killed Laboni by wrapping her in a veil. When the launch reached Barisal, Moniruzzaman managed to escape and moved to Dhaka by bus. Police sources said the arrested Moniruzzaman was the driver of the carpool.
Barisal Sadar OC Abdullah Al Mamun Naval Police Station said naval police had brought a murder case as a plaintiff in the incident. Moniruzzaman arrested is in his custody. He said that preventive detention can also be requested in the interest of the investigation.
Incidentally, the body of an unidentified woman was recovered from the unique cabin No. 391 of the Parabat-11 motorboat that arrived at the Barisal river port from Dhaka on the morning of September 14. The cabin boy went to clean the cabin and found the body of an unidentified woman lying on the bed with the door open. The matter was immediately reported to the naval police. They recovered the body and sent it to the morgue of the Surat-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital. Based on the investigations and other evidence, several law enforcement units called for an investigation after it was initially confirmed that it was a murder. The identity of the unidentified woman was revealed in the first part of the PBI investigation. Jannatul Ferdous Laboni’s home in the Adampur area of the Bhanga Police Station. Her father’s name is Abdul Latif Mia. Laboni, a mother of two, is an electrician. She lived with her father Abdul Latif Mia and her mother Mumtaz Chowdhury in a house in the Pallabi-2 area of Dhaka.
