The mystery of the attack on Ghoraghat Upazila Nirbahi’s officer Wahida Khanam and her father Omar Ali Sheikh in Dinajpur has been revealed. The only person involved in the attack was Rabiul Islam, a former UNO employee and a suspended employee. He admitted this information during questioning by the detective police. He also confessed that no one else was directly or indirectly related to him. Rabiul Islam also claimed in questioning that the attack on the UN was planned out of anger to fire him.
He also stole a large sum of money from UNO’s home the night of the attack. During preliminary questioning, the police also found the truth of these words by Rabiul. After analyzing the information provided by him, the detective police also agreed that he was involved in the incident and no one else was involved with him.
A law enforcement official involved in the investigation of the case said this on condition of anonymity.
He said: “The matter has been confirmed through CCTV images, use of technology and recovery of evidence along with the words of the defendant Rabiul.” According to Rabiul, several clues have been recovered, including a closet key and a hammer.
Rabiul Islam said that last December he was transferred from the Dinajpur Deputy Commissioner’s Office to Ghoraghat as a gardener. He later stole money while working there and was suspended for that crime and a departmental case was filed.
According to Rabiul’s explanation during preliminary questioning, he stole Tk 16,000 from Ghoraghat officer Upazila Nirbahi about four months ago. He was later fined 50,000 rupees. At that time, Rabiul asked the UN not to subject him to any punishment. But then he was temporarily expelled, which angered him.
This anger grows when it is missing in your family. While working, he was paid 16,000 rupees, but after being fired, he started earning only 9,000 rupees. A month ago, he went to UNO’s house to apologize for his crime. But even then, the level of resentment increased because he was not forgiven. So, Rabiul Islam planned such an attack.
According to plan, Rabiul left the house on the afternoon of September 2. He came to the district city and took a bus to Ghoraghat. When he reached Ghoraghat, it was around 10 at night. Rabiul entered UNO’s home in Pachil Top at 1:17 pm after walking through different areas, including the market. Then he tried to enter the house with a chair. After failing, he brought a ladder from the loft. This ladder was originally made by Rabiul Islam himself while working. While trying to climb this ladder, he left it again due to hesitation. Then he decided to move home. But, after a while, he decided again that he would enter the UN house. Around 3:30 pm, Rabiul climbed the stairs and entered UNO’s bathroom with the bathroom fan. However, he was unable to enter UNO’s bedroom immediately as the bathroom door was locked from the outside. After trying for half an hour, he turned on the bathroom faucet and went into the bedroom. At that moment, UNO received the news and woke up. Then Rabiul struck his head and body with a hammer from behind. He brought this hammer with him.
UNO screamed at the blow of the hammer and fell on the bed. Hearing her cry, Baba Omar Ali Sheikh came out of the next room and pushed her away. At this moment he fell to the ground. At that moment Rabiul also hit him and wanted the key to the closet. When he shows the key, he tries to open the closet with the key. At that moment, with a large sum of money, he went back downstairs with the bathroom fan at around 4.30 p.m. Then he left the ladder at the previous place and climbed the wall and headed for the road. He got on a bus from Dhaka to Dinajpur and moved to Dinajpur. After bathing and having breakfast at home, he headed back to the DC office in town. The next day, when the news from the UN spread across the country, Rabiul was in the office of the Deputy Commissioner in Dinajpur (DC) all day.
During preliminary questioning, Rabiul told police that some of the money he had brought from UNO’s home was turned over to a local. The one who was given is a player. The man also confessed to accepting the money and testified in court under section 164. However, the man has been shown arrested in a gambling case.
Rabiul also said that guard Nadeem Hossain Palash was asleep at the time even though he entered UNO’s home and carried out these activities. According to the plan, Rabiul entered a bag with his clothes and his hammer. I knew there was a CCTV camera in the house. So he wore a mask and hat so that no one would recognize him and so that his face would not be recognized by the CC camera.
When asked by police why two people were seen entering the home on CCTV footage that night, the police officer, who did not want to be identified, said there were multiple CCTV cameras at UNO’s home. Several people were said to have participated in the attack because the same person appeared to be dressed in a different color due to differences in position, resolution and type of light reading. We later confirmed that only one person was involved in the attack. He is the son of Khatib Uddin from the village of Bhimrulpara in Bijora Dhamahar of Biral upazila in the district of Rabiul Islam. Police arrested him at his home at 1:10 p.m. last Wednesday. Rabiul Islam has 6 brothers and a sister. His three brothers work in Dinajpur Township and one brother works as a clerk in the deputy commissioner’s office. Of the other two brothers, one is a beverage merchant and the other is a farmer. His father was the imam of a local mosque. His father died a couple of years ago. Rabiul is married.
Currently, DB police have detained Rabiul after receiving a 7-day pretrial detention order from the court.
