Eight BNP-backed councilor candidates in the last municipal elections submitted a written request not to nominate HM Jahangir, Chairman of Mahanagar Uttar Juba Dal, in the by-election in Dhaka-17. They filed a written complaint at the party’s headquarters in Naya Paltan on Friday.

In a written petition addressed to BNP’s Chief Deputy General Secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, eight candidates for councilors from 14 general districts in the Dhaka-17 constituency signed the petition. They also linked the ruling Awami League to the acquittal of SM Jahangir of several cases.

It is alleged that in the last elections of the Dhaka North City Corporation, SM Jahangir and its leaders and activists from Juba Dal clashed with candidates from the Awami League in all districts. On election day, none of his agents went downtown for the BNP-nominated mayoral candidate. SM Jahangir took the opportunity to campaign for mayoral candidate Tabitha Awal, but remained inactive on Election Day. Due to which he obtained only 19 votes in his own constituency.

In the letter, the councilor candidates said the attack on two BNP councilor candidates was also fueled by the local Awami League’s connection to SM Jahangir. The five councilor candidates he supported in the city corporation election left the field after colluding with the local councilor candidate from the Awami League just before the election. Clear proof of this is that the bail of all the candidates except one supported by SM Jahangir was confiscated and the other four candidates did not obtain the same votes. He also sent his loyal Helal Uddin Talukder as a rebel candidate in district no.

He further said that the presidents of two police stations loyal to Jahangir had publicly marched in favor of the Awami League councilman candidate and were active in the electoral field. The Awami League candidate’s badge was around his neck and he also wanted to vote from house to house. Thana herself has formed a BNP pocket committee through BNP Chairman Nagar Uttar, MA Qayyum. Those who have become leaders are actively doing business with the local Awami League leaders. She is also harassing leaders and activists of the Awami League by sending other leaders and activists to jail while forming a pocket committee. They also filed a complaint with the president of the BNP in this regard.

According to the written complaint, SM Jahangir, President of the Dhaka Metropolitan North of Juba Dal, has been in BNP politics as the Awami family’s son-in-law, but has been in power for almost 12 years. Although most of Uttara’s leaders and activists were arrested more than once, Jahangir was not arrested. He was acquitted of various charges. Among these cases, there are more than 9 (6) 18 cases from the Uttara West Police Station, 24 (9) 18 cases from the Uttara Police Station and 9 (6) 18 cases from the Uttara Police Station. His brother-in-law Apu Sikder, secretary general of Uttara Thana Juba Dal, also escaped these cases. Another brother-in-law, Dipu Sikder, is the leader of the Uttara East League Thana Chhatra.

The Dhaka-17 post was declared vacant on July 9 after the death of member of the Awami League presidium, Sahara Khatun. SM Jahangir presented his nomination yesterday at the BNP office to obtain the party’s nomination in the by-elections of that constituency.
