The government has initially allowed the online portals of 92 newspapers, including The Daily Star, to be registered. The matter was reported in a notification from the Information Ministry on Thursday.
Among the newspapers authorized to register are 57 in Dhaka, 10 in Chittagong, two in Mymensingh, four in Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna and Barisal, and seven in Sylhet.
The notification stated that, as part of the ongoing online news portal registration process, the online portals of these 92 newspapers (online version of the magazine) were initially allowed to register.
The news portals that have been allowed to register have been required to register within 20 business days from the date of publication of the notice by paying the prescribed fee under government regulations.
The notification was issued within two days of the meeting of the editorial committee of the national newspaper editors’ platform with Information Minister Hasan Mahmud on September 1.
At the meeting, the editorial board asked the government to take immediate steps to register the portal online.
At the meeting held at the secretariat, Information Minister Hasan Mahmud said that arrangements would be made to register the online version of the newspaper as a matter of priority.
Previously, on July 31, 44 online news portals and newspaper websites were selected for registration. After amending the order, the Ministry of Information allowed 34 online news portals to be registered, excluding newspaper websites.
