Garment Workers Prohibited From Leaving Work During Eid Holidays

Workers in all sectors, including ready-made garments, have three days Eid-free, but cannot leave the workplace. State Minister for Labor and Employment Begum Mannujan Sufian also asked employers to pay a 100 percent bonus.

He made the call while addressing a tripartite meeting of government, owners and workers at Shram Bhaban in Vijayanagar, the capital, on Thursday.

At the meeting, it was decided to give Eid permission for three days on May 23, 24 and 25 with the consensus of the owners and union leaders. No worker can leave the workplace. Employers will pay workers within the first seven business days of June based on current May payment rules. Later in his speech, the state minister asked for a 100 percent bond to Eid.

The tripartite meeting was attended by Deputies Abdus Salam Morshedi and Safiul Islam Mohiuddin, Secretary of the Ministry of Labor KM Ali Azam, Inspector General of the Department of Factory and Establishment Inspection Shivnath Roy, Director General of the Department of Labor AKM Mizanur Rahman, Director General of Abdus Salam Industrial Police. Dr. Rubana Haque, Mohammad Hatem, Senior Vice President, BKME, an organization of knitwear manufacturers and exporters. Senior officials from various ministries and agencies participated, including Kalam Azad, China Rahman and Lima Ferdous.
