In the last five years, 26,795 rape cases have been filed in the country’s police stations. Of these, 4,331 cases have occurred in 2016, 4,063 in 2016, 4,795 in 2016, 6,006 in 2019 and 6,220 until October 2020.

On October 13, attorney Yadia Zaman sent a legal notice to the defendants requesting implementation of the law and instructions from the Superior Court in the rape case. But since no action was taken even after notification, a writ petition was filed in Superior Court seeking instructions to declare arbitration in the Oct 16 rape case a criminal offense. Lawyer Yadia Zaman and Lawyer Shahinuzzaman Shahin filed the judicial petition on behalf of the human rights organization Ain O Salish Kendra.
The order petition seeks strict compliance with the Superior Court directive to resolve rape cases within 180 business days without interruption. The writ petition also sought instructions for submitting information on rape cases at police stations across the country over the past 10 years.
