The US ambassador to the United Kingdom denied reports that he made “insensitive” comments about race and gender to embassy staff.
CNN said Woody Johnson had been investigated by US officials after making “generalizations about black men” and “cringeworthy” comments about the appearance of women.
But the diplomat tweeted that the claims were “totally inconsistent with my long-standing history and values.”
Johnson was named ambassador to the United Kingdom by President Donald Trump in 2017.
CNN also reported that Johnson had tried to advance the president’s business interests in the United Kingdom by asking politicians if the Open Championship golf tournament could be played on Trump’s Turnberry course.
But Johnson, who is co-owner of the NFL team, the New York Jets, also denied that claim.
“I have followed the rules and ethical requirements of my office at all times,” he wrote on social media.
When asked about the allegation at a White House press conference on Wednesday, President Trump said he had never spoken to Johnson about the matter.
