Former Disney Channel co-stars Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez shared an important day on July 22, 2020. But their fans, known respectively as Lovatics and Selenators, turned to social media to discuss the Lovato moment. This is what they had to say, and the other reasons why the date was remarkable.
Chronology of the friendship of Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato
Lovato and Gómez met as children. They both starred in the PBS show, Barney and friends, filmed in his home state of Texas. A few years later, each moved to Los Angeles with their respective families to pursue careers in Hollywood, and each landed roles on the Disney Channel.
The childhood best friend story met their first speed bump in 2010. The couple fixed things a few years later, only to have them fall again. They were photographed at the 2017 InStyle Awards (above), and Gomez told Elle that she “communicated personally” after Lovato’s overdose in 2018.
Lovato said in 2020 that they are no longer friends

But just as fans were getting their hopes up on a true reconciliation between the two, Lovato dismissed this. She returned to music with her 2020 Grammys performance, where she sang a new song, “Anyone,” written before her overdose. Gomez congratulated her on social media, but Lovato did not respond.
In a later interview in 2020 with Harper’s Bazaar, he explained why he didn’t thank his former co-star. “When you grow up with someone, you will always have love for him. But I’m not friends with her, “said Lovato. She added: “I will always have love for her and I wish everyone nothing but the best.”
She got engaged on Gomez’s birthday
Fast forward a few months. On July 22, Gómez turned 28 years old. He spent the day sharing the birthday wishes of his Instagram friends in his own story. As expected, Lovato was not among those who intervened. But she was quite busy.
That same night, Lovato shared that she is engaged to her boyfriend of less than a year, actor Max Ehrich. “I knew I loved you the moment I met you,” she wrote in her Instagram post announcing the news. “I am honored to accept your hand in marriage. I love you more than a subtitle could express, but I am ecstatic to start a family and a life with you. ”

The response from social networks came in waves. Many were quick to point to Ehrich’s past admiration for Gomez, writing on Twitter, “Demi is going to marry a Selena Stan,” with screenshots of posts removed since then. Another did the same and added, “Demi really got engaged to Selena’s biggest fan on Selena’s birthday.”
The date was also significant for another reason. “Demi and Max got engaged on Selena’s birthday and Wilmer’s anniversary, a victory for both of them,” wrote another Twitter user. In fact, Lovato’s ex-boyfriend, actor Wilmer Valderrama, posted a photo on Instagram with his fiancée, Amanda Pacheco, who titled, “#HappyAniversary”
Others think this is why Lovato got engaged when he did.
In truth, all of these aligned events could be a coincidence. But there is a much more personal anniversary for Lovato, which is probably not the case. Lovato’s aforementioned overdose occurred on July 24, 2018. Many of her Lovatics believe that is why Ehrich chose this moment to propose.
“Two years will pass tomorrow from the most traumatic day for her and now, two years later, she can finally replace that traumatic memory of July with a beautiful one,” summarized a Twitter user. In other words, it’s not all about a fight. Sometimes it is about personal growth.
