UK man arrested after jet skiing in Irish sea to meet his girlfriend


A man from the United Kingdom was arrested earlier this week while taking a jet ski from Scotland to the Isle of Man to meet his girlfriend.

Dale McLaughlin, 28, of Irwin, Scotland, was sentenced on Monday to four weeks in prison for violating island man-man coronavirus laws by traveling to the island on Friday, the BBC reported.

According to the Island Man F Man website, the island has been closed to non-residents since March with only a few exceptions. The BBC reports that the violation carries a three-month jail term or a maximum fine of 10,000 10,000 (approximately 13 13,500).

Isle of Man chief Howard Quell told the broadcaster that he was “surprised” by McLaughlin’s trip.

According to the BBC, McLaughlin had never ridden a jet ski before making a purchase last week to cross the Irish Sea from Isles of Scotland’s Isle of Wight to Ramsay on the Isle of Man.

He reportedly believed the trip would only take him 40 minutes, but due to some bad weather the trip was extended to four and a half hours, according to The New York Times.

Once he reached the Isle of Man, according to the Times, he had to walk another 15 minutes to the city of Douglas, where his girlfriend lives.

Although the two were able to spend time together over the weekend, McLaughlin was arrested Monday.

According to the Times, Kyle said, “This guy was aware of the law and clearly ignored it when he chose to break into the community and choose to risk potential lives.”

There are only four active coronavirus cases on the island, according to the Isle of Man website.

The BBC has reported that most of the lives have returned to normal for residents since the border was closed, which has remained stable since March.
