President Donald Trump’s U.S. properties have imported more than eight tons of Chinese goods since September, according to a CNN analysis.
More than six tons of tables were shipped to the Trump International Hotel in New York last fall, and two tons of cabinets were delivered to Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles in May, CNN reported.
In the 2016 campaign and during his presidency, Trump accused China of unfair trade practices and promised to address the trade deficit between the two countries.
As part of his “America First” policy, Trump entered into a months-long tariff war with Beijing and pressured American companies to redirect their business within the United States.
Trump’s “tough on China” stance seemed to soften in early January when a phase one trade deal was reached, though shortly thereafter he stepped up attacks on Beijing after the coronavirus outbreak began. In recent months, he has repeatedly used racist slurs such as the “Kung Flu” and the “Wuhan virus” as part of his attempt to blame China for the spread of the disease, which has been devastating in the United States.
Trump has used China as a subject of campaign discussion in an attempt to distinguish himself from alleged Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, who he says is “weak in China” and “China’s puppet.”
The news of the Trump Organization deals comes after Biden launched his $ 700 billion campaign proposal last week with the goal of boosting the economy by emphasizing investment in American products and research, a plan that White House trade adviser Peter Navarro has called Trump’s agenda “blatantly swindling.”
Biden’s campaign spokesman tweeted CNN’s story on Tuesday and wrote: “No wonder @ JoeBiden’s” Buy American “agenda has triggered so many wins.”
