The Food and Drug Administration’s list of potentially toxic hand sanitizers continues to grow, and the agency announced Friday the recall of four best-selling products nationwide at retailers, including Walmart and Target.
The recall, by Real Clean Distribuciones de La Loma, Tlalnepantla, Mexico, involves the following brands of disinfectants:
- Born Basic ANTI-BAC HAND DISINFECTANT
- Aroma Theory KEEP CLEAN Moisturizing hand sanitizer
- Odor Theory KEEP IT CLEANING Moisturizing Hand Sanitizer
- Lux Eoi disinfectant gel for hands at consumer level
The recall follows previous FDA warnings to consumers and healthcare providers regarding a large number of hand sanitizers labeled as containing ethanol, but tested positive for methanol. Also known as wood alcohol, methanol can be toxic when absorbed through the skin and fatal if swallowed.
The regulatory agency has expanded the number of disinfectants consumers should avoid to almost 80, some of which have already been recalled and others that the FDA recommends be recalled because they contain the life-threatening substance.
“The agency is aware of adults and children who ingest methanol-contaminated hand sanitizers that have caused recent adverse events such as blindness, hospitalizations and death,” the FDA said.
According to the agency, young children who accidentally ingest these products, as well as teens and adults who drink them as alcohol substitutes, are at increased risk for methanol poisoning.
The long list of potentially dangerous disinfectants (see below) includes brands sold at Sam’s Club, owned by Walmart, and BJ’s Wholesale Club.
The FDA initially warned consumers in June of nine hand sanitizers to avoid and since then he has added more brands that positive result for methanol
The agency’s warning comes amid strong demand for disinfectant due to the coronavirus. pandemic, with public health officials urging consumers to wash their hands frequently and use hand sanitizer. For example, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends using disinfectants that contain at least 60% ethyl alcohol, as well as frequent hand washing.
The FDA urged consumers to stop using methanol products, which must be disposed of immediately in hazardous waste containers. “Do not wash or pour these products down the drain,” the agency advised in June.
