The violent weekend of July 4 sees dozens of shots fired in New York

About 40 people were shot in New York City from July 4 to early Sunday, including several deaths, police sources said.

Between midnight Saturday and 6:30 am Sunday, 39 people were hit by gunfire in all counties except Staten Island, with at least three people dead, the sources said.

Between the incidents, a man in his 20s was fatally shot in the chest near West 111th Street and Lenox Avenue in Harlem around 10 am Saturday, sources said.

In Brooklyn, a 20-year-old man was shot in the chest at 12:43 am Sunday in eastern New York, police said.

The man, who was shot on Atkins Avenue, near Pitkin Avenue, was rushed to Brookdale Hospital medical center but could not be saved.

His identity was not immediately revealed.

Around the same time, eight people were injured in two separate incidents in Upper Manhattan, the sources said.

Three men and a woman, who were between the ages of 27 and 42, were hit when the bullets flew into West 142nd Street and Lenox Avenue, the sources said.

A few minutes later, just a few blocks away, four other men were shot at a party at West 131st and Lenox, sources said.

Seven of the victims in those two shootings were expected to survive, while a man in the latest shooting was in critical condition, according to sources.

Then, at 2:40 a.m., a 23-year-old man was shot in the back on 116th Street near Morningside Park in Harlem, police said. He was taken to St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital by private means.

He did not cooperate when interviewed by police and later died, according to a New York police spokesman.

The researchers searched for ballistic and video evidence. Her name was withheld pending family notification.

Locals said the violence stemmed from an annual Independence Day party.

“You felt safe. It was going so well, ”said an assistant who witnessed the bloodshed and refused to give his name. “The only thing they were running away from before was fireworks.”

For reasons that were unclear on Sunday afternoon, a fight broke out at the party and shots rang out.

“You didn’t know where it came from because they were running from one side to the other,” said the witness. “This is not the time for this. We were here taking care of our own affairs. … The boy lost his life. “

Almost simultaneously, a 34-year-old woman was hit by a stray bullet in her right leg while walking her dog on Anderson Avenue near West 164th Street in the Highbridge section of the Bronx, sources said.

She was rushed to Lincoln Hospital and is expected to survive the injury.

At approximately 4:15 am Sunday, two men were shot on East 39th Street near Avenue D in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, the sources said, leaving one of the victims, 20, dead.

His identity was not immediately disclosed and no arrests were announced.

Around 6 a.m., four men and a woman were shot on Academy Street, near Post Avenue in Inwood, Manhattan, the sources said.

Among the victims, aged between 16 and 31 years, three of the men were included in critical condition in area hospitals, while the shooter remained free, according to sources.

The July shootings come immediately after a violent June in the city. With a total of 205 shootings during the month, it was the bloodiest June in 24 years, since 1996, when New York Police recorded 236 incidents, New York Police said.

The series of shootings adds to at least 13 reported stabbings across the city between 4 am Saturday and 9 am Sunday, the sources said.
