The Madrid zoo keeper has been seriously injured following a gorilla attack

A Madrid Zoo animal guard suffered serious injuries on Sunday after being attacked by a gorilla.

Around 10:15 a.m. local time, the employee, who has more than 19 years of experience, went to a safe area for regular food and cleaning. At the time when the 46-year-old woman came face-to-face with Malabo, a 400-pound, 29-year-old male gorilla, unaware of the employee, arrived in the area.

According to the English translation of the zoo’s statement on Facebook, “an internal investigation was conducted into the reasons for the animal’s entry into the area.”

The zoo was able to safely remove the animal which is now “quiet” and in its interior bedroom, Zoo said.

The gorilla injured the worker’s head and chest, and her attack left her with multiple fractures, including two broken arms, Sky News reported.

Madrid police are now handling the investigation.
