The original ending to The Last of Us Part II was going to put Ellie on an even darker path. In an interview with Game Informer, Creative Director Neil Druckmann and narrative leader Halley Gross discussed the final moments on the PlayStation 4 exclusive. It should go without saying there is main spoilers ahead. You have been warned.
“When I signed a lot, it was very similar,” Gross revealed. “We did a lot of iterations on what that last act looked like, but the bottom line was that Ellie would kill Abby. About halfway through production, we changed that and made Ellie let it go at the last second to [illustrate] that a small part of the old Ellie, the Ellie with humanity, the Ellie impacted by Joel, still exists within this character who has been so far overcome by his quest for revenge. “
The change occurred when the narrative team discussed Lev and Yara’s fates, as they originally had permutations with each of them dying or surviving. After it was argued that Lev should survive, Druckmann felt that Ellie should no longer kill Abby. Gross was surprised by the suggestion since she didn’t even know that changing the ending was on the table. However, given the way the game turned out and the appearance of humanity Ellie can save, this decision was probably the best one. It also opens up even more possibilities in a possible third game.
“Letting Abby live felt bad thematically initially,” Druckmann said. “But at the end of the day, he felt more honest for the character. The theme [and] What we’re trying to say changed a bit, but our top priority is always to be honest with the character. There are certain things we are trying to achieve, but they can only work if we are consistent with the character we are writing. “
Druckmann also revealed that when he writes a character, he feels it’s more important to keep a character’s motivation constant than to make it nice, as there will always be enemies. One of the other Naughty Dog characters, Nathan Drake, will hit the big screen next year when the movie Uncharted, often delayed and starring Tom Holland, has gone into production.
