Earlier in the day, citing unnamed sources, the report said Trump made the change after a phone call with Jewish lawmakers saying “Jews are only for them” and “stick together.”
“This is what Donald Trump really is,” said Aaron Kiak, director of Biden’s Jewish Engagement.
“We know that Donald Trump’s use of anti-Semitic tropes has raised the spirits of all those who hate Jews. We must not allow ourselves to be overwhelmed by our holy reflection and Trump’s dangerous rhetoric during holy times.
“This serves as a wake-up call for relatively few Jewish Americans who still insist on standing with the current occupier of the White House and promoting it. Our community should stay together to do everything we can to defeat Trump in November.
Trump’s reported remarks about Jews were part of a larger Washington Washington Post story that included alleged slam against multiple races and ethnic groups, including allegations that Black Americans blamed themselves in the struggle for equality.
White House Deputy Spokeswoman Sarah Matthews disputed the allegations.
“Donald Trump’s record as a private citizen and as president has been one of fighting for inclusion and advocacy for equal treatment for all,” Matthews told the Post. “Anyone else who suggests just trying to plant a section.”
Asked to comment on Trump’s reported comments, the White House led The Hill to Matthew’s quote in the Post’s story. A Trump campaign spokesman was not immediately available for comment.
This is not the first time Trump has been criticized for his comments about American Jews. Last year, Jewish groups publicly denounced Jews who voted for Democrats as publicly disqualified.
He reiterated a similar comment on a call with Jewish leaders before Rosh Hashanah last week, lamenting the fact that, according to several reports, he had not won a majority of Jewish votes.
“Which really surprises me, and I have to tell you because I saw a poll, that in the last election I got 25 percent of the Jewish vote. And I said here that I have a son-in-law and a daughter who is Jewish. “I have beautiful grandchildren who are Jewish,” Trump said on the call, according to CNN. “But I’m surprised it seems like it’s almost automatically a Democrat vote.”
“We really appreciate you, we love your country and thank you very much,” he told American Jewish leaders.
