Less than 24 hours after withdrawing from the Arizona State Empire Classic, the Sun Devils are back – Baylor has pulled out of the event.
The state of Arizona planned to retreat on Sunday night, following news that Baylor coach Scott Drew had tested positive for COVID-19, sources told ESPN. The Bears planned to play against the Sun Devils in the coolest game of the opening night of college basketball on Wednesday. According to sources, however, the medical protocols of the state of Arizona did not allow him to play the role of baler, despite being the only member of the program for a positive test on Friday or Sunday.
Questions have been raised about Villanova and Boston K College Ledge about whether the other two teams in the Empire Classic will be able to play Baylor, plans have changed.
Baylor is no longer traveling to the Mohagen Sun for the tournament, sources told ESPN, while Arizona State left for Connecticut Casino on Monday morning.
The Sun Devils planned to travel to Mohagen on Monday, even though they are no longer in the Empire Classic. Mohegan Sun is hosting a number of events and tournaments in the first two weeks of the season’s basketball season, and the state of Arizona will be able to find a number of opponents.
The fourth team in the Empire Classic remains to be decided.
Baylor will now open his season at Seton Hall on Sunday, but it’s not clear if he will proceed as planned for the game.
