In an interview with EntryIPPA founder Kenan Aktulun explained that there are “tens of thousands” of photos submitted each year. Judge training consists of “a diverse cast of visual storytellers” and all photos are judged blindly. Submitted photos cannot be edited with desktop applications, but editing is allowed in iPhone applications. Aktulun said Entry that there was only one instance where a winning image was found to have been taken with something other than an iPhone:

“There are basic things we can do, like ask them to send the original image from their phone,” says Aktulun. “Until now we have had nothing of notable rape in the last 13 years. There were only two cases and I think there was a case of a guy from Poland who presented something and I think her photo earned an honorable mention and someone else saw her photo and sent us something about it being misleading. That was the only one we disqualified. “

One of this year’s winning images was actually shot with the iPhone 4, underscoring that you don’t need the latest and greatest iPhone to take great pictures. This image was taken by Omar Lucas and took first place in the “People” category this year:

The iPhone Photography Awards are completely independent from Apple, although Apple often promotes winning images every year. Apple also has its own separate Shot on iPhone competition as well.
