- A new series of official renderings of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 reveals what is likely to be the final design of the foldable phone.
- Major changes include a hole-punching camera that removes the notch, a larger external display, and a more perfect hinge.
- The Galaxy Z Fold 2 is expected to debut in Samsung Galaxy Unpacked on August 5.
A new set of amazing new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 renders have just been leaked online, giving us our best look at the much-anticipated upcoming foldable.
These images come from MySmartPrice, (via Ishan Agarwal), who received them from “a trusted source.”
The two colors we can see here, called Mystic Bronze and Mystic Black by Samsung, both really fit the phone. Samsung certainly seems interested in them as they are offering the same colors on the Galaxy Note 20.
The phone’s front cover has a 6.23-inch screen, significantly larger than the external 4.6-inch screen on the original Galaxy Fold. To keep a camera on the front of the phone without the need for a huge bezel, the Z Fold 2 uses a perforated notch.
From the back, we can see the power button on the side of the phone, which appears to house another capacitive fingerprint sensor. Given the difficulty of making flip phones, it doesn’t seem likely that we’ll see a fingerprint sensor under the screen for this device.
The rear camera block appears to contain three sensors and a flash. Other rumors tell us that these cameras will be a 12MP primary sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide sensor, and a 64MP telephoto sensor. It’s the same set of cameras you’d find in the Galaxy S20, which is a solid photo phone, but not as good as an iPhone 11 or Samsung’s more expensive Galaxy S20 Plus.
The connection of these two halves appears to be a curved hinge, which looks much smoother than the angular hinge on the Galaxy Fold. Since the original Fold had trouble keeping the debris out of its internal mechanisms, causing significant damage to the phone, it appears that Samsung has solved this problem with a different hinge design.
Inside the phone, there is a punching selfie camera on the right side of the screen. It is a little difficult to detect, but in any case it is a good thing. Compared to the big notch the first Galaxy Fold had, the hole makes the Z Fold 2 look more in line with other modern Android phones.
The bezels of the internal display also seem to have been reduced compared to the first Fold. That is probably what has enabled Samsung to increase the screen from 7.3 inches to 7.7 inches. Samsung is also giving this enlarged display a smooth refresh rate of 120Hz, according to rumors.
There are no signs of an S Pen in these renders. Despite some rumors suggesting that the Fold 2 might get a Note-style pen, the fact that there is no S Pen visible in these renderings seems to confirm that Samsung will not offer a pen with the Z Fold 2.
Internally, we expect the Z Fold 2 to be armed with a Snapdragon 865 chipset and 12GB of RAM, with either 256GB or 512GB of storage. It should have a total battery capacity of 4,356 mAh, divided into two individual batteries, and have 5G compatibility, thanks to the Snapdragon silicon. Expect a price of around $ 2,000, like the first Galaxy Fold.
While it looks like we’ve seen almost everything the Galaxy Z Fold 2 has to offer, you can see the official reveal of this foldable on August 5, the day of Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event. That’s the time when we’ll also see the debut of the Galaxy Note 20 series, in addition to the Galaxy Watch 3, Galaxy Buds Live, and Galaxy Tab S7.
