DIICOT prosecutors conducted several searches on the “Pentaguard” hacker group, which planned to launch several cyber attacks against hospitals in Romania, which would have affected its IT infrastructure and implicitly prevented the fight against COVID-19.

DIICOT prosecutors suspect that in early 2020 an organized criminal group was formed, consisting of 4 people, operating in the virtual environment, under the title “Pentaguard”, with the aim of committing specific cybercrime crimes.

“The group’s objective was to target two levels of execution, namely: possession of computer applications intended to be used in specific computer attacks, such as SQl injection and defacement, for the purpose of unauthorized access, followed by compromising content and, where applicable, stealing stored computer data, actions targeting web domains that hosted the websites of various public (central and local public administration, government) and private (financial, cultural, educational, etc.) institutions of Romania and the Republic of Moldova and possession and development of malicious computer applications (malware) for use in computer attacks such as rasomware, cryptolocker (encryption of computer data and implicit blocking of their legitimate operation) and RAT (Remote Trojan Access: remote control of the destination computer), “says DIICOT.

Through such malicious attacks, group members attempted to block, restrict access, and disrupt computer systems, as well as fraudulently access and alter the content of web domains.

Such attacks were and should be directed against various public institutions both in Bucharest and in other cities in the country.

“At different intervals and based on the same criminal resolution, with the intention of illegally accessing and committing themselves through the unauthorized introduction of computer data and the unauthorized modification of the content of the target platforms, by the same mode of operation, the Defendants carried out several “SQL injection” and “disfigurement” computer attacks on other websites belonging to some public and private legal entities in Romania, which are affected both by the availability and the integrity of the content of the data stored within the respective IT infrastructures In addition, the information obtained so far showed that they intended to launch ransomware attacks, in the near future, against some public health institutions in Romania, generally hospitals, using a social engineering by sending a malicious executable application, from the “Locky families “or” BadRabbit “(computer virus), hidden in an email and in the form of a file that would apparently come from other government institutions, regarding the COVID19 threat,” DIOCT prosecutors also show.
