Former mayor Constantin Simirad will be led down the last road today. There will not be hundreds or thousands of people from Iași, many of whom knew and appreciated him, but only his family and friends. Constantin Simirad died of COVID on March 28, after several days of suffering. On May 13, he would turn 80 this year.

Only 60 people have direct access to the funeral

The funeral of the former mayor of Iaşi, Constantin Simirad, will take place today, at 12 noon, at the Eternitatea Cemetery, where the family’s grave is located. Relatives, friends, but also personalities who knew him will be present in a small number.

The legislation imposed by the pandemic, respectively the last order of the Minister of Health, provides for a limited number of people who can attend a funeral. The procession will not be more than 60 people, and only 20 will have access to the service inside the church.

Initially, the family had arranged for the funeral to take place on April 30, two days after his death. Later, they announced the postponement of the funeral.

Medical sources said that the one who was in quarantine, until yesterday, is Constantin Simirad jr., One of the two sons of the former mayor. In addition, Stela Simirad, the mayor’s wife, came out of isolation yesterday at home, after also suffering from COVID-19, but, fortunately, she had a mild form of the disease, being monitored by the family doctor.

“The funeral will be carried out in accordance with the procedures that exist in any other cause of death”, Vasile Cepoi stressed.

According to Minister of Health Order 436/2020, in the event of finding the death of a COVID-19 patient, there are certain standard procedures that must be followed. Family members, if they are less than 100 kilometers from the medical unit where the death was recorded, must come to carry out the identification within 24 hours. After identification, an autopsy of the deceased is not necessary unless, in addition to the positive PCR test, they have lost their lives as a result of violence. Once the family members have completed the death forms, the body of the person who lost his life is embalmed, disinfected, placed in two special plastic mortuary bags and then in a coffin that is disinfected after closing. The coffin, in the case of deaths caused by COVID, remains closed from the morgue until the end of the funeral.

Simirad, career and politics

Constantin simirad He was born on May 13, 1941 in the town of Coţuşca, Botoşani County. He graduated from the National College and then from the Faculty of Mathematics of the University „Al.I. Cuza ”by Iaşi (1965). He worked as a beginning teacher at Dorohoi High School, Botoşani County (1965-1968). In 1968, he was hired as an assistant professor of mathematics at the Technical University „Gh. Asachi ”from Iaşi, achieving the title of Medical Associate Professor. Between 1973 and 1975, he was assigned as a professor at the Faculty of Mathematics in Oran (Algeria). In 1979 he obtained the scientific title of Doctor of Mathematics. Constantin Simirad entered politics in 1991, joining the Civic Alliance Party (PAC). In 1992 he was elected mayor of Iasi. He held this position until 2003, when he became ambassador to Cuba. Following the local elections on June 1, 2008, Constantin Simirad was elected Chairman of the Iaşi County Council, obtaining 36.50% of the total valid votes cast. It was the last political position in which he was elected. He was expelled from the PSD in September 2009, after declaring that he will support President Traian Basescu in the presidential election campaign, and joined PDL leader Gheorghe Flutur in addressing the Moldovan electoral campaign.

Constantin Simirad has published numerous articles in the field of mathematics, both in Romania and in prestigious international magazines. Before becoming mayor, he contributed to the magazines “Convorbiri literare”, “Cronica română”, “Cronica”. Weekly, during his tenure as mayor, he published the series of articles grouped under the title “Mayor’s Tablet”: Ziarul de Iaşi, 24: Ore, Evenimentul, a group that was arrested in December 2003. Since December 2004 he has written two columns in Ziarul de Iaşi and Evenimentul. He also published articles in the column “Echo tablet” of the National Journal of Public Administration. He has published several volumes of short prose, including “Open Air Audiences”, “In the Shadow of the Gods”, “Noah’s Ark” and “The Outcasts of Heaven”. Due to his journalistic talents, Constantin Simirad became a member of the Union of Romanian Writers.
