Originally created for the new generation of dual-screen devices, Windows 10X will be compatible and even launch first on traditional single-screen devices such as laptops.
The pandemic forced Microsoft to rethink the strategy for its new operating system, in the context in which a large number of people work at home during this period.
The American company has changed its mind and is no longer targeting multi-screen devices alone. Therefore Windows 10X can be installed on single screen PC. Also, it will be released for the first time in the latter.
Social isolation and work from home has increased the time users use Windows 10 by 75%, says Microsoft, which uses the telemetry features of the operating system to collect data from users.
Windows 10X was announced last year as an update to offer a more modern and simple interface. This year, Surface Neo should have appeared, a tablet with two screens that would have been the first product to use this operating system.
However, the pandemic forced Microsoft to postpone the launch of Surface Neo, but motivated the American company to accelerate the development of Windows 10X.
Beyond the new interface, Microsoft does not provide any other information about the new operating system, either technically or in terms of its availability. More information could be announced during the Build event, dedicated to developers, to be organized online this month.
