The head of the anti-mafia prosecution resigned after her husband, a former high-ranking police officer in the department for fighting organized crime, was convicted.

The announcement was made Thursday evening by the Minister of Justice, who received and accepted the resignation of Giorgiana Hosu from DIICOT. The position of DIICOT head, left vacant by Giorgiana Hosu, was assumed by her deputy, who will assume the interim position.

UPDATE 20:50 On Friday, President Klaus Iohannis signed the decree on the release of Giorgiana Hosu from the position of Chief Prosecutor of the Directorate of Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism as a result of his resignation, the Presidential Administration announced.

The Minister of Justice will then hear from the new candidates, followed by the approval of the SCM and the appointment by the President of Romania.

The gesture of Ms. Hosu, the third DIICOT boss to resign, comes somehow naturally.

Her husband, himself a former police officer in the anti-mafia department, was sentenced in the first instance to three years in prison with suspension.

And the President of Romania himself had said, before the Bucharest Court decision, that if a conviction is reached, he will not let the wheels of the system turn at their own pace and that there will be consequences.

Which happened late at night, when Ms. Hosu resigned so as not to affect the credibility of the institution that she had run since February.
