Cătălin Denciu, the doctor who literally caught fire for his patients, is 48 years old and specializes in intensive care. He will be transferred on Sunday with a military plane, to Belgium, for specialized treatment, after suffering serious burns.
The doctor is a former university colleague and friend of the Minister of Health, who personally participated in the intervention after the accident. In fact, Nelu Tătaru was with Cătălin Denciu on the plane that transported him from Iași to Bucharest.
Dr. Cătălin Denciu was on duty in the AŢI section of the County Emergency Hospital. When misfortune happened, he made a rare gesture of sacrifice and dedication. Although hell had broken out around him, he tried to save the intensive care patients from the flames. Only six of the 16 Covid patients, still in serious condition, survived. The doctor was diagnosed with serious injuries: burns over almost half of his body, some grade 4, on his legs.

The doctor was flown on a military plane from Iasi to Bucharest. He was admitted to the Floreasca Hospital, where he received specialized treatment and his health was evaluated. On Sunday he will arrive in Belgium, at the burn department of the Reine Astrid Military Hospital.

The six patients admitted to ATI, who survived the fire, were taken by doctors from Iasi. The victims do not have burns on the body, say the doctors who treat them.
To treat patients, Iași doctors also called their colleagues from home, so that staff could be insured for the next 24 hours. On Monday, however, at least 30 doctors, nurses and nurses with experience in intensive care are needed.
