More than 170 countries are in talks to join this initiative, known as COVAX, which has already received a contribution of 400 million euros in the form of guarantees from the European Commission.

The COVAX mechanism, led by the Alliance for Vaccines (GAVI) together with the Coalition for Innovation in Epidemic Preparedness (CEPI) and the WHO, aims to accelerate the development and manufacture of vaccines against COVID-19 and ensure fair and equitable access for each country. from the world.

White House spokesman Judd Deere said in a statement Tuesday that the United States “will not be constrained by multilateral organizations influenced by a corrupt World Health Organization and China.”

“This President (Donald Trump) will do everything possible to ensure that any new vaccine meets FDA (Food and Drug Administration) standards for safety and efficacy, is thoroughly tested, and saves lives,” added Deere.

The US decision comes after the Donald Trump administration withdrew from the WHO in July, claiming that Beijing has too much influence within the organization and that it wants to pursue the strategy of “going alone” to develop a vaccine.
