Prime Minister Ludovic Orban is optimistic, saying that if everyone follows the rules, we can see a reversal of the worrying trend of new COVID cases in a few days. He assured on Thursday, on Digi24, that the government is not seeking to return to harsh restrictions, as they were in spring.
The Prime Minister believes that the explosion of COVID cases, which is recorded across Europe, not just Romania, is the result of intensified interactions between people, after many activities resumed since 1 September, they returned from vacation, were restaurants, cinemas, theaters were opened and schools started.
Ludovic Orban is convinced, however, that with the new measures adopted this week, the upward trend can be stopped and the results can be seen in 7-10 days. In the prime minister’s opinion, in Romania we are not talking about a second wave, but a continuation of the first wave.
“My opinion is that we can stop the increase in the number of cases, my estimate is that we can stop it in 7-10 days. Why? Because, on the one hand, we have instituted new measures that have stopped activities where there was a higher rate of spread of the virus, we have imposed the use of masks and other measures, we have intensified controls, we have diversified control techniques, they are police officers. In civilian clothes, an important part of the police force carries out civilian controls, because, as a general rule, when they did it in uniform, they were immediately given ‘six’ and were hardly surprising. We also have TELVERDE that we have put into operation, where they notify us and we can direct all the controls to places where we know for sure that the rules are not being followed. Also, there were no more openings of activities to increase social interactions ”, explained Ludovic Orban to Digi24.
The government does not intend to reach a “confinement”
On the other hand, Ludovic Orban assured that the Government does not intend to reach a “blockade”, the immediate objective being to reduce and stop the contagion rate.
“We are not targeting a lockdown,” I said from the beginning. Our goal is to reduce the infection rate, stop the increase in the number of infections. We’ve seen lately, at least the last few weeks, that there’s a visible and significant increase in people’s compliance. More and more people are beginning to understand. Of course there are certain groups, deniers with whom you cannot speak rationally. (…) There are provocateurs everywhere in these groups. There are many people who appear in many places. The messages they send are messages that go against the interest of all citizens and against our general interest. Our general interest is that life develops in conditions that are as close to normal as possible, ”said Orban.
He explained that the government wanted a balance between the measures taken, the priority of protecting public health, and the need for people to have jobs and businesses to run smoothly.
The government has constantly sought to increase treatment capacity, both in hospitals and in wards, and it will continue to grow, the prime minister said. He confirmed that the Ministry of Health is preparing a regulatory act to relieve hospitals for asymptomatic patients.
