On Saturday Prime Minister Ludovic Orban sent a message on Europe Day highlighting the need for EU solidarity.

“70 years have passed since the then head of French diplomacy, Robert Schuman, read the Declaration that bears his name, a time when the historical significance for the European Union today is May 9, celebrated each year as the Europe Day “. At a distance of seven decades, the need for solidarity evoked in the text of the Schuman Declaration, when the entire continent was trying to recover from the war, is so current now, as society and European economies are working to return to normalization after the unprecedented crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. (…) We can overcome the pandemic crisis that we have faced for several weeks if all other countries overcome it. Adequate support and joint action are essential to stop the spread of the coronavirus and to limit the socio-economic consequences of the current period, “says Orban in m essej.

Remember that last year, the European leaders meeting in Sibiu, in Romania’s first term as President of the Council of the European Union, sent a firm message of unity and desire to consolidate the European project.

The Prime Minister notes that European solidarity has demonstrated its effectiveness, indicating coordinated actions for the repatriation of citizens from other Member States, patients taken from countries most seriously affected for treatment, transportation of basic medical supplies or teams of doctors who helped their colleagues . from other countries to save lives.

“Romania has also participated in these efforts and we are satisfied with the appreciation shown by the top of the European institutions towards the solidarity gestures of the member states,” says Ludovic Orban.

According to the Executive Director, the creation of a strategic European reserve of medical supplies through the rescEU civil protection mechanism, the economic aid plan approved by the EU for the benefit of the Member States, the expansion of the Union Solidarity Fund and health crises are evidence of European unity.

“We are confident that other mechanisms will be followed to strengthen health systems with the recovery of European economies and that the next financial framework of the European Union will reflect the new priorities. Strongly linked to its European destiny, Romania supports any effort towards development coherent and European solidarity, and after we all overcome the critical period to return to normality more united, in a Europe closer to citizens, “says the Prime Minister.
