The number of suicides among men fell by 1% in Japan to 13,943 cases, while the number of women who finished their days increased by 14.5% to 6,976 in 2020, according to a preliminary report by the National Police Agency.
Last year, millions of temporary and part-time jobs were cut, many of which were held by women and young people.
“Women are more susceptible to the changes in their lives brought about by the pandemic, as more women than men do not have a stable job and the burden of housework and childcare is heavy,” said Takanori Hirano, associate professor. from the sociology department of Momoyama Gakuin University, cited by Kyodo.
Over the years, suicide in Japan has been seen as a way to avoid shame and dishonor. For a long time, asking for and receiving psychological help was a stigmatized move, and Japan is at least honorable number one among the G7 countries in terms of suicide rates.
However, after suicides peaked at 34,427 in 2003, Japanese politicians launched a comprehensive suicide prevention program in 2007. The program, which involves a combined effort by government and business, envisages the identification of groups of risk, limitation of overtime and easier access to counseling.
