More than 19 million Romanians are expected to vote in the local elections on Sunday, September 27, but certainly not all will come. However, participation has a substantial influence on the outcome of local elections.

More than 19 million Romanians with the right to vote on Sunday September 27, in the almost 19,000 polling stations, are expected to elect their mayors, local and provincial councilors and presidents of provincial councils.

However, it remains to be seen how many of the citizens entitled to vote will go to the polls on Sunday, given that turnout in local elections organized since 1989 never exceeded 65%.

UPDATE – Attendance at 9:00 – 4.51% of voters voted

As of 9:00 a.m., 770,282 voters had voted in the country, representing 4.51% of the total, according to News.ro.

Turnout is 4.51%, and in Bucharest it is 3.76%, at 09:00, in local elections on Sunday. In Bucharest, the turnout is higher than four years ago, when it was 2.3%.

In last year’s presidential elections, at the same time, turnout was 3.52% nationally and in Bucharest 3.32%.

In the previous local elections, at 9 o’clock, 4.29% of voters had voted, and in Bucharest 2.3%.

UPDATE – Attendance at 8:00 – 1.86% of voters voted

Participation in the country in local elections was, on Sunday, until 8.00, for 1.86% – respectively more than 345,000 voters, according to the reports of the Central Electoral Office (BEC).

In the urban area, 170,435 voters went to the polls so far, and in the rural area, 177,082.

The counties with the highest participation in the first hour were Giurgiu – 2.74%, Olt – 2.73% and Calarasi – 2.58%, and the lowest participation was in Covasna – 1.10% and Harghita – 0.93%.

In Bucharest there was a 1.67% presence.

In 2016, the participation until 8:00 was 1.85%.

What was the turnout in the 2016 local elections?

In 2016, local elections were held on June 5, also on a single ballot. Participation at the national level in the 2016 local elections was lower than in the previous local elections, in 2012. This is how 8,874,432 people voted, which represents 48.44% of the number of registered voters on the electoral lists, according to the BEC.

In Bucharest, turnout in the 2016 local elections was 33.31%, the lowest turnout in the country. Instead, the highest share was four years ago in Giurgiu, Teleorman and Olt counties, which exceeded 60%.
