After giving himself the opportunity to become a senator for life at the end of his presidential term, Vladimir Putin enacted a law addressed to him: according to its provisions, he and his family will enjoy legal immunity from any criminal prosecution for any crime, even after of leaving the presidency.
Before the entry into force of this law, Russian heads of state enjoyed immunity only during their mandate. From now on, it will be extended to protect them even after the end of their term as they are immune from any criminal prosecution for any crime they have discovered. In addition, it will extend to the president’s family. The protection will also apply retroactively to Dmitry Medvedev, the only living former Russian president and one of Putin’s main allies.
The new law also makes it more difficult to lift a leader’s immunity, which implies a more complex procedure and more conditions. A leader’s immunity can only be lifted if they are suspected of high treason or have committed a serious crime. The procedure must be introduced by the State Duma, the lower house of the Federal Assembly of Russia, and the final decision will rest with the upper house, the Federal Council, reports Agerpres.
Over the summer, President Putin enacted a series of controversial constitutional amendments that will allow him to remain in power until 2036. So far, the Kremlin leader has not announced his intention to run for a new term in the 2024 presidential elections.
