The Salem Statesman Journal writes that Chris Tofte began searching for his wife, son and mother-in-law when a fire broke out around them. On Tuesday, he found his wife, badly burned, walking down the road home when he returned with a borrowed trailer to retrieve his belongings.

At first he did not recognize her and told her that he was looking for his wife and son.

“I’m your wife,” Angela responded, according to the Statesman Journal.

Wyatt Tofte was found in another car, and the family allegedly escaped and got into the car believing it would be protected from the surrounding flames.

“Wyatt was the sweetest kid; he liked to fish, he played video games, like many kids, but he was a sweet and polite kid,” said Susan Vaslev, a spokeswoman for the family.
