Dave Prowse, an actor and former bodybuilder known for playing the character Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy, has died at the age of 85, the BBC reports.

Prowse, originally from Bristol, UK, was cast in this role because of his imposing stature, but the character’s voice was owned by James Earl Jones.

However, the athlete-turned-actor was most proud of his portrayal of the Green Cross Code Man character. The position, which promoted road safety in the UK, earned him an MBE.

He added: “Although he is famous for playing many monsters, to me and to everyone who knew Dave and worked with him, he was a hero in our lives.”

The actor died after a brief illness.

Prowse’s career spanned 50 years, but his role as the Sith Lord in Star Wars brought him international fame.

Unfortunately, her West Country accent was not suitable for this role, so her voice was doubled.

However, Prowse appeared in all three films in the trilogy, due to his 1.98m tall and ability to lift weights, representing England at the Commonwealth Games in the 1960s.

Before becoming an actor, Prowse had success in Hollywood, physically grooming Christopher Reeve for the role of Superman.

Prowse made his acting debut as Frankenstein’s creature in the 1967 parody film Casino Royale, based on Ian Fleming’s first James Bond book. He later played the role twice, Horror Of Frankenstein in the 1970s and Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell in 1974.
