At least two people died and several were injured after being hit by a car that entered a pedestrian zone in Trier, a city in western Germany on the border with Luxembourg, writes DW.com. Police asked people to avoid the area. The driver was arrested.

UPDATE 16.30 The driver of the car that entered the crowd, a silver Range Rover, is a 51-year-old German national, police announced at a press conference that took place a few minutes ago.

Police confirmed the deaths of two pedestrians and several injuries, without giving details on the total number of victims, according to DW. Police said there were several victims, including children.

The motivation for the gesture is not yet clear.

The details of the incident are still unclear, but a police spokesman told DPA that the driver of the car was taken into custody.

“There are several injured pedestrians who were hit by the car. The car is blocked, the driver was detained, ”the spokesman declared.
