Romania has not received doses of the vaccine group AstraZeneca that raises suspicions at the European level, and so far more than 200,000 Romanians have been vaccinated with the serum of this company, says the coordinator of the vaccination campaign, Valeriu Gheorghiță. Regarding the decision of 9 European states to temporarily stop the administration of the AstraZeneca vaccine, Gheorghiță said that the Romanian authorities are awaiting clarifications and, “most likely, if the decision addresses all vaccine batches, Romania will make this decision. “

The coordinator of the vaccination campaign in Romania, Dr. Valeriu Gheorghiță, declared on Thursday night, on Antena 3, that Romania is analyzing, in turn, whether it is necessary to suspend vaccination with the vaccine produced by AstraZeneca, at the waiting for more data.

When asked if our country is heading for such a decision, the doctor replied: “It is very likely that if the decision addresses all batches of vaccines, Romania will also make this decision.”

When asked if it is a matter of hours or days, Valeriu Gheorghiță said that the decision “can be made at any time”, as soon as possible after the reason for the decision of the European states is notified to the authorities.

  • We are interested in knowing what the reason was, since at this time the countries that have suspended vaccination are among those that have received doses from the group for which this suspicion of these thrombotic events is expected. The European Medicines Agency is currently analyzing all the reported cases, the 22 cases reported at the European level and will make it clear, of course, that this decision is recommended by the EMA, which also authorized the placing on the market of this vaccine, said the military doctor.

He explained that it is a batch of 1.6 million doses of vaccine from the AstraZeneca company, distributed in some 17 European countries, which is suspected to be potentially related to the occurrence of problematic phenomena – blood clots – in a period of up to 10 days after vaccination.

  • “The European Medicines Agency has examined these cases and at this time has determined that there is no indication of a causal relationship. On March 9, at the European level, the European Medicines Agency had reported 22 of these cases out of approximately 3,000,000 of people vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine, and the batch on which this suspicion has been raised and which is currently being evaluated involves approximately 1.6 million doses that have been distributed in approximately 17 European countries.
  • Romania did not receive doses from this lot. At this time we also note that around 9 European countries have decided to discontinue vaccination with the AstraZeneca vaccine. We do not yet know if this is a decision that affects all vaccine lots or only the vaccines in that lot.
  • I got in touch with the representatives of the AstraZeneca company from Romania and right now there is a meeting at European level on this issue and as soon as this meeting is completed, I will also have all the data available and we can analyze if this can be Imposed in Romania , but you have to understand that so far there is a lot of suspicion.
  • I don’t want to create worries and panic among vaccinated or scheduled people, “said Valeriu Gheorghiță.

According to him, approximately 200,000 people were vaccinated with AstraZeneca’s serum, and Romania still has about 200,000 doses from this company in stock.

What will happen with the recall if Romania decides to suspend the administration of this vaccine? The doctor says that the decision will probably be made to vaccinate with another type of vaccine or that people will be vaccinated with a single dose. However, he stressed that it was not a decision.

Nine European countries have so far decided to temporarily stop administering the AstraZeneca vaccine.
